Description
PEACE+ is an Erasmus+ Long-Term Activity coordinated by the Italian National Agency INDIRE as the second phase of the original PEACE initiative. It aims to strengthen the connection between Erasmus+, active citizenship and democratic participation by fostering a stronger sense of belonging to the European Union, promoting EU values, and encouraging young people—especially those who are more hesitant—to engage in democratic life and civic engagment. The project brings together over 20 Erasmus+ National Agencies and creates synergies among Alumni, Ambassadors, and Role Models across all education sectors. Through concrete actions such as the development of educational e-modules, focused communication campains, scientific research and on civic engagement, citizen labs, and conferences (TCAs) PEACE+ seeks to enhance both awareness and impact across Europe.
What is one thing about democratic participation that everyone should know?
Participation in democratic life aspires to everyday engagement. PEACE+ can inspire and empower citizens through Erasmus+ experiences.
Why is it important that Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps programmes promote participation in democratic life?
Because Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps do more than fund mobility—they shape engaged citizens. By promoting participation in democratic life, they strengthen young people’s sense of belonging to Europe, deepen their understanding of EU values, and empower them to turn learning and solidarity experiences into active civic engagement. This is essential for building resilient, inclusive, and participatory European democracies.
How is your LTA/SNAC supporting this
The PEACE+ LTA seeks to enhance citizens’ understanding of European values and the advantages of EU membership, while fostering stronger civic engagement and democratic participation. It places a particular emphasis on reaching hesitant citizens and inspiring young people to take an active role in the democratic life of the European Union.
PEACE+ capitalizing on previous best practices and enlarging the scale of results:
- Develop and integrate networks of Erasmus+ actors
- Develop and spread training modules and resources on EU values/ EU citizienship
- Increase the number of communication, training, and dissemination activities
- Continue research activities on the various topics related to civic engagement

What would you tell to organisations who want to start working with this topic?
At a time marked by growing voter abstention and increasing disaffection not only with politics but also with civic engagement, participation in European democratic life—especially among young people—is more essential than ever for strengthening democracy itself. Erasmus+ projects can become concrete spaces for active citizenship and true “training grounds” for discussion and awareness of European values. Knowledge and participation foster the development of critical thinking and empower people to make free and responsible choices.
