Understanding EU data protection policy is a Briefing document created by the European Parliament that aims to explain in easier terms what are the main legislative documents that guide the EU policies when it comes to right to privacy and right to protection of personal data.

It provides insights into why such policies exist at the European level, what are the main legal frameworks that guarantee such rights – including the General Data protection Regulation (GDPR), what are the main EU institutions responsible as well as what other challenges that still need to be considered in the future.

The European Parliament is the EU's only directly-elected institution. The Parliament acts as a co-legislator, sharing with the Council the power to adopt and amend legislative proposals and to decide on the EU budget. It also supervises the work of the Commission and other EU bodies and cooperates with national parliaments of EU countries to get their input.
