Generation Climate Europe hosts the European Parliament Youth Dialogue – the first event in a series of discussions between young people and Members of the European Parliament!

When? May 27 2021, 18:30 CET

The context for the event: The EU ETS is the first large greenhouse gas emission trading scheme, which covers about 45% of EU greenhouse gas emissions across Europe. It comprises 11,000 power stations and manufacturing plants as well as part of the aviation sector. The ETS has been in place since 2005 and will be revised as part of the European Commission’s ‘Fit For 55’ package. The Commission is expected to release the proposal for the revision of the ETS in June, including an expansion of the ETS to shipping and a reform of the scheme for aviation emissions. The next step will be for the Parliament to negotiate with the Council of the European Union, both being co-legislators.

Under the theme ‘Are we moving fast enough?’, the dialogue will centre around 4 major topics:

  •  A review of the aviation and shipping sectors, explaining why emissions continued to increase;
  • A general presentation of the EU ETS, what kind of instrument it is and how it works;
  • Focus on aviation: Why is aviation not yet fully covered, why is it important to end free allowances, and cover all outbound flights and not only intra-EEA flights?
  • Focus on shipping; Why shipping is the last unregulated sector and why it urgently needs to be included in the ETS
