Report on Media and Information Literacy and Digital Participation activities, trends and needs within the Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps Programmes in 2021 and 2022

The SALTO Participation and Information Resource Centre (SALTO PI) conducted a comprehensive analysis with the aim of determining whether Media and Information Literacy and Digital Participation were present in the Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps Programmes. The research also sought to discover how these topics and themes relate to the horizontal Erasmus+ priority “Participation in democratic life, common values and civic engagement” across Youth, Education and Training sectors. This report summarises the key findings, trends, challenges, deficiencies, and best practices in the integration of Media and Information Literacy and Digital Participation within the Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps Programmes.

Aims of the report

  • State of play. The report provides an overview of the current reality of Media and Information Literacy and Digital Participation within the Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps Programmes.
  • How Youth, Education and Training fields are linked to Media and Information Literacy and Digital Participation. The report conveys an understanding of the trends in each field and sub-action, as well as highlighting the importance of the connection between these fields when designing projects related to Media and Information Literacy and Digital Participation.
  • How to incorporate Media and Information Literacy and Digital Participation into Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps projects. The report offers recommendations for National Agencies, SALTO Resource Centres and European Stakeholders on how to better address these two topics through their initiatives, activities and mission.
  • Inspiration. The report lists good practices around Media and Information Literacy and Digital Participation that can be replicated, adapted and used as models for creating new projects.

Alonso Escamilla is Manager of European Projects and Research at the Catholic University of Avila. He has developed several research projects on the fields of youth, digital participation and democratic participation for the Council of Europe, European Commission, SALTO Participation and Information Resource Centre, Foundation for European Progressive Studies, European Youth Forum, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Population Fund and the EU-LAC Foundation. He also is member of the Pool of European Youth Researchers (PEYR) of the EU–CoE Youth Partnership and member of the Pool of Trainers of the Spanish Youth Council.

Paula Gonzalo

Paula Gonzalo is Talent Development Assistant at the Secretariat of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and Deputy Head of the Working Group on Gender Equality of the European Student Think Tank. She has carried out and coordinated several research works and European projects on sustainability, digital participation, democratic participation, non-formal education, gender and youth work, with a focused emphasis on LGBTQI youth.
