Adolescent perspectives on artificial intelligence
Year of production: 2021
The UNICEF’s resources illustrate young people’s experiences with AI and how they understand the risks and opportunities it presents in their lives. Youth organisations might find UNICEF’s resources and AI case studies useful when considering using and experimenting with AI in their practice.
Over the course of 2020, UNICEF hosted a series of global consultations with adolescents to learn about their views and knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) systems playing an increasingly important role in their lives. The analysis is based on conversations with 245 young people from Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Sweden and the United States in a series of workshops. The report features key messages that emerged from these consultations and the methods employed to engage adolescents in dialogue on AI.
Additionally, UNICEF’s policy guidance explores AI and AI systems and considers the ways in which they impact children. It draws upon the Convention on the Rights of the Child to present three foundations for AI that upholds the rights of children:AI policies and systems should aim to protect childrenThey should provide equitably for children’s needs and rightsThey should empower children to contribute to the development and use of AI
